The
bird flu still exists! It has become a major crisis in Hong Kong. So far the
death toll os at 10 as of today. Amongst those who have died was a 74-year old
man when he tested positive for H7N9 avian influenza virus. The poor old man
died only 12 hours later within being tested in Shangai. Officials are
monitoring the virus closely, specifically focusing on poultry markets. Scientists
detect the virus has most likely come from the “migratory birds from East Asia
mixing with domestic fowl in China’s Yangtze (YAHNG TZEY) River delta region.”

Uruguay
is so close to becoming a country that allows same-sex marriages. All they
await is for the president, Jose Mujica, to sign the proposal. If and once he
does, Uruguay will be known as the second country in Latin America, and the 12
country in the world to be a country that allows same-sex marriage! We hope the
president signs that proposal.

Nothing
complicated here: Avril Lavigne is psyched to marry Nickelback's Chad
Kroeger.
On Thursday's Chelsea
Lately, the 28-year-old singer said she's "gonna go all
out" with the couple's wedding. But Chelsea Handler was quick to remind the future Mrs.
Kroeger that this won't be her first trip down the aisle.
"I know you were married
once, and that didn't work out, obviously," the late-night host said,
referring to Avril's marriage to Sum 41's Deryck Whibley, which ended in 2010.

Nuggets at Mavericks.
Despite the injuries that have
cost the Nuggets Danilo Gallinari (knee) and Ty Lawson(plantar fascia), they’ve maintained
their hold on the No. 3 seed, which might be the most important battle for
seeding left to be decided. As it stands, Denver (54-24) holds a 2.0-game lead
over the Clippers (52-26), and a 1.0-game lead over the Grizzlies (53-25).
Denver closes with four games against teams below .500, but playing Dallas at
the American Airlines Center (where the Mavs are 22-16) is the toughest of the
bunch. Staying at No. 3 is critical, not only in maintaining homecourt
advantage, but because it means a matchup against theWarriors or Rockets, much easier first-round foes than the Clippers or Grizzlies. The Nuggets have the tiebreaker
advantage against both the Clips and the Griz.
Don Mattingly, one of the most respected men in the recent
baseball history, said it perfectly with a single word.
“Stupid.”
The act was stupid. The malice
was stupid. The entire thought process was stupid. AndCarlos Quentin perpetrated it all. He was the
mastermind behind the ugly stupidity Thursday night at Petco Park that led to Los Angeles Dodgers
co-ace Zack Greinke, he of the $147 million contract,
breaking his collarbone in a brawl.
(CNN) -- Uruguayan lawmakers have approved a
same-sex marriage measure, leaving just one more key step -- the president's
signature -- before such couples can wed in the South American country.
A
marriage equality bill passed the lower house Wednesday, with 71 of 92
lawmakers supporting the measure. The house approved a different version of the
measure in December. Last week, Uruguay's senate approved the bill in a 23-8
vote.
If
signed by President Jose Mujica, who has indicated he supports the measure, the proposal would make Uruguay
the second country in Latin America to legalize same-sex marriage and the 12th
country in the world to do so.
Hong Kong (CNN) -- The death toll in China's bird flu crisis stood at 10 on
Friday, as Hong Kong authorities announced plans to test all poultry imported
from the mainland.
A 74-year-old man died on Thursday afternoon in Shanghai after
first being diagnosed with pneumonia and then testing positive for the H7N9
avian influenza virus on Wednesday night, the state-run Xinhua news agency
reported.
He was one of three new infection cases diagnosed in the city, as
the total number of cases across eastern China climbed to 38, Xinhua said. The
other two patients -- an 83-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man -- are in a
stable condition in hospital.
Seventy people have had close contact with the three patients, but
none of them have exhibited abnormal symptoms, according to a statement from
the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission, cited by Xinhua.
The World Health Organization (WHO) and Chinese health officials continue
to monitor for human-to-human transmission.
While the source of the infection is unknown, poultry markets have become the focus of the
investigation by China's health ministry and the WHO. The virus had been known
to affect pigeons but had not previously been discovered in humans until a
series of cases were reported in China last week.
On Wednesday, the Chinese Academy of Sciences said the H7N9 virus
had probably originated from migratory birds from East Asia mixing with
domestic fowl in China's Yangtze River delta region.
(CNN) -- Brandon Holt didn't make it to his 7th
birthday. He won't graduate high school, won't get married, won't have kids of
his own.
But in a way, he will live on.
The father of the Toms River, New
Jersey, boy -- who died earlier this week
after being shot by his young playmate -- said he and his wife decided to
donate Brandon's organs, in hopes some good will come of their tragedy.
"We both decided that it
would help carry his name, that he's helping somebody," Ron Holt told the
Asbury Park Press.
Brandon was playing in and around
his 4-year-old friend's Toms River home on Monday evening when the younger
child left the yard and went inside, police explained. The little boy came back
outside with a .22-caliber rifle.
(CNN) -- A powerful
storm that swept across the country will lose its fury Friday and blow out over
the Atlantic by day's end, forecasters said.
The weather system stretched from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico on
Thursday, and dumped snow in the north central and northeastern United States.
In the Ohio and Mississippi valleys, it poured torrential rain and
spawned tornadoes in the Deep South.
A woman froze to death after her car broke down near Berea,
Nebraska, when a blizzard struck Monday, state police said. Her son survived,
but suffered frostbite and hypothermia, and is at a local hospital.
An employee for Ameren Missouri was electrocuted Thursday while
attempting to restore power after storms, the company said.
In Mississippi, one person died in Kemper County, on
the Alabama border Thursday, after strong winds destroyed a steel building
along a highway, the National Weather Service reported.

UNION TOWNSHIP —
The Union County police officer who fatally shot himself in a park has been
identified as Keith Surhoff, according to the funeral home handling his
arrangements.
Surhoff, who records show joined the county force in 1988, was
found on a bench behind a softball field in Kawameeh Park early Wednesday with
a bullet wound to the head. Police have since determined it was suicide.
The 50-year-old Union Township resident was not in uniform nor
on duty at the time, police said. He was married with two children.
Surhoff, a Westfield native, moved to Union as a child and
attended Kawameeh Middle School, according to his obituary.
He served in the U.S. Air Force before becoming a Union County
officer, and enjoyed hunting and fishing, his obituary said.
Visitation will be held Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the
McCracken Funeral Home on Morris Avenue in Union.
